At the Easterseals Rehabilitation Center in Evansville, IN, we believe that individuals with disabilities deserve the opportunity to reach their greatest potential at home, in the classroom, on the job, and in our community. That's what our Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) program is all about.
For some individuals with disabilities, the inability to communicate is the greatest obstacle to achieving their dreams. Augmentative & Alternative Communication can help local people with complex communication and learning needs achieve goals that were previously unattainable.
Recent advancements in technology can help to change lives for individuals with communication challenges caused by autism, intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, ALS, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and other conditions. Communication tools range from specialized “apps” for tablets and adapted keyboards for computers to dedicated high-tech devices that are fully customized for persons with very limited fine motor abilities.
Experienced Speech-Language Pathologist Susan Turley leads our program, which will evaluate clients’ needs and abilities, demonstrate various systems to each individual, offer "try-outs" of devices and adaptations to determine the best "fit" for each person, and provide clients with the training they need to succeed with their new technology.
