Serving Southwestern Indiana, Southern Illinois, and Western Kentucky
For many adults with disabilities, driving an automobile is a major step toward independence. The Easterseals Rehabilitation Center's Assistive Technology Solutions, headquartered in Evansville, IN, enables many individuals to achieve that goal. Additionally, our program provides fitness to drive assessments for individuals who may have safety concerns based on age, medical status, vision changes, or driving history.
An Occupational Therapy practitioner with further training in driver rehabilitation completes an objective clinical assessment and comprehensive behind-the-wheel evaluation to identify each person's abilities and needs. Driver's training, education in compensation techniques, and training in the use of hand controls or other adaptive equipment are all available from our Occupational Therapist / Driver's Rehabilitation Specialist.
Individuals can learn to drive in a semi-controlled environment using our fully adaptable sedans and minivan. Each vehicle can be configured with equipment ranging from basic steering devices to hand control systems.
Our services also benefit experienced drivers whose abilities change due to accident, illness, or aging. Retraining with new techniques or special driving aids help many mature drivers compensate for changes. When appropriate, our caring staff can assist individuals in the transition from driving to using other forms of transportation.
